Distractions are good for writers. Those that have worked with me know I'm in a constant state of distraction. I doodle. I look at people's shoes. I wonder what's under things. This is me avoiding the physical act of writing.
BUT, here's the deal: I'm still writing.
I'm letting my lizard brain flex and jiggle. My first draft is a mental draft—no structure, just a bunch of figments, shapeless thinklets begging for attention.
Writers (all creatives, really) need to break their dependency on the keyboard and screen. Embrace the meandering mind. Start by not starting.
